Here we go again . . .

The one thing that Ryan and I have been dreading since Drew was born is his first cold. It is pretty much inevitable since he goes to daycare, but it is the worst to see your little baby feeling so miserable. Right after Drew turned fourth months old he started to get the daycare cough and it soon turned into a raspy voice with some wheezing. My first guess was RSV because Isla had it and I remember the symptoms. Since this is our second child I really wasn't concerned when we took him to the doctor two Mondays ago. Maybe I should have been a bit more worried. The on call doctor came right in, took one look at him and told us we should "calmly" pick him up and take him down the ER because the clinic wasn't equipped to give Drew what he needed. Apparently Drew's breathing was a bit too labored for their liking and he needed a nebulizer treatment, which our doctor's office couldn't provide.

So off to the ER we went. While I was driving the short two miles to the hospital I couldn't help but be overcome with some Mommy guilt. I knew that Drew wasn't feeling well, but he was still smiling and not very fussy. I had no idea that he was in such dire straights. The ER visit went as smooth as it could possible go and Drew was the only one to shed some tears. He definitely was a hit in the ER and all the nurses stopped by to say hi and pinch his cute little fat rolls. We left the ER with two prescriptions - one for the steroid for the nebulizer treatment and another for an antibiotic for his ear infection (here we go again - see Isla's experience with this here).

We went back to our doctor two days later so he could assess Drew's progress with the nebulizer treatment. All though he gave us the clear to stop the nebulizer treatments he still wasn't happy with Drew's wheezing so he gave us another prescription for another steroid to get his airways to open up a bit more. After three days on this prescription his wheezing finally went away and our little man became a healthy boy again. But what a week it was! I know we are in for some more colds, but this first one was pretty dramatic.

Here is our little man getting one of his nebulizer treatments at home:
He was such a good boy when we had to do this and would hold real still for us. Only a couple times we ended up in tears.

FYI - we are now on our second round of antibiotics to treat his ear infection. This seems to be working, but we'll see.
